Frequently Asked Questions

1- Which personal CD player should I buy?

You need a portable CD player with a frequency response that reaches at least 18,000Hz. We recommend Panasonic or Sony as their players have the best frequency response and are well made.

TOP

2- What other equipment will I need?

If your CD player doesn't have a rechargeable battery, you will need rechargeable dry batteries, and a battery recharger.

TOP

3- Can I play Sound Therapy through speakers?

You need to use headphones in order to get the true benefit of the therapy. If you wish to use your home stereo with headphones that is fine but it will not allow you the mobility of the portable CD player so it may be hard for you to put in the required listening hours. When using Sound Therapy for a baby that is too young to wear headphones, an alternative is to set up speakers on the right and left of the cot so that the baby will get the correct right left balance.

TOP

4- Why can't I hear any sound in the left ear?

You will hear the sound in the left ear if you remove the right headphone and listen to the left one alone. The sound is intentionally louder in the right ear as this stimulates the brain to process sound more efficiently.

TOP

5- Can you get it on CD?

Yes, now Sound Therapy is  available on CD because the standard of digital recording used on CDs is now good enough quality and can give the whole benefits of the program.

TOP

6- What is the tssst-tssst sound on the CDs/tapes?

That sound is the therapy! It is caused by the Electronic Ear boosting the high frequencies and it is the sound that stimulates the ear and brain and rehabilitate the muscles.

7- How can I find the time to listen?

It takes no time at all to listen to Sound Therapy because you can listen on the run, literally. With your portable CD player you can listen while you are jogging, reading, sleeping, studying, watching TV, traveling to work, having a conversation or almost any other activity.

TOP

8- Why are the CDs so expensive?

In fact the Joudry self help Sound Therapy program is the least expensive way to use Sound Therapy. As compared to approximately $20.00 per hour for clinical treatment, this program works out at less than $2.00 per hour! Also because you purchase the CDs yourself you are able to use them for as long a period as required to obtain maximum benefit. For some conditions, listening for several months may be required, and there is no additional cost to you. You can also share the program with other members of your family.  Remember that when you purchase the Sound Therapy program you are purchasing a highly specialized therapy course, which is completely different to purchasing ordinary CDs for listening pleasure. You will also receive our free service of telephone support and advice to help you obtain the maximum benefit from your listening program.

TOP

9- Why are the CDs so cheap?

Because this is a self help program. Patricia Joudry and the Benedictine monks of Saskatchewan believed that Sound Therapy should be made available to as many people as possible at an affordable cost, and Sound Therapy International has continued to spread their work. Therefore you do not need to pay for a practitioner's time or the use of their facilities. There is no testing required and it is up to you to conduct your own program. As long as you have read one of the books by Patricia and Rafaele Joudry, you have enough information to conduct your listening program successfully.

TOP

10- Are there additional CDs/tapes to use after the Basic Kit?

Yes, we have a range of over twenty other CDs or tapes for those who require more variety or who want to take their listening to a higher level. Information on the additional programs will be sent to you with your Basic Kit.

TOP

11- Should I make a copy of the CDs/tapes, and use the copy, to preserve the original?

No. Each CDs/tape is made directly with the Sound Therapy Electronic Ear and a duplicate copy would not convey the correct frequencies. You would be wasting your time listening to an inferior CD/tape. There is no problem with using the originals because if one of your CDs/tapes gets damaged we will replace it for a small handling fee. Simply return it to us with a note explaining what is wrong with it and we will send you a replacement.

TOP

12- Why do the CDs/tapes have a hissing scratchy sound?

The scratchy sound is caused by the boosting of the high frequencies by the Electronic Ear. The more highly filtered a tape is, the more scratchy or static sound it will have. This sound is not white noise as it contains varied frequencies depending on the music. The sudden boost to the high frequencies is what stimulates the ear and brain. It is a very important part of the therapy program and it is definitely meant to be there. Many people prefer the highly filtered tapes once their ears become accustomed to the sound.

Basic Kit CD 4 is filtered to 8,000Hz all the way through. On some CD/tapes there is a short passage at the end that is also very highly filtered and sounds completely different to the rest of the tape. This is done intentionally so that the music plays right to the end of the tape so as not to leave you wondering if the tape has finished or not.

If you find the music is disturbing you, please turn down the volume, and feel free to have it on while you are doing other things, even if you go into an environment where the Sound Therapy is drowned out by other noise it is still effective. You can even listen to other music or watch TV with it on.

TOP

13- Who are the musicians?

We do not publicize detailed information on the musicians and pieces as the reason for using Sound Therapy is not its artistic delivery but its therapeutic effect. Patricia Joudry made the original tapes and it was her decision not to give details on the musicians or the exact selections.

14- The Sound Therapy books

If you do not already have one of Rafaele and Patricia Joudry's books, we highly recommend that you order one, as the books will answer most of your questions about the program. These books are also an essential reference for all Sound Therapy listeners. They give you a depth of knowledge into the theory, results, variety of experiences, comparative treatments and clinical background to the method plus the motivation and incentive to persist and do the program correctly.

You can choose their first book: Sound Therapy: Music to Recharge your Brain or alternatively, Rafaele Joudry's book Triumph Over Tinnitus. If you are using Sound Therapy for your children then we recommend Rafaele Joudry's book Why Aren't I Learning?

If you are not a big reader, then it is important to at least read the first few chapters. Then you can refer to the rest of the book as questions come up for you.

15- The Children’s Booklet

To our first time enquiries we offer a free booklet and catalogue on Sound Therapy for children, called Listening Helps Learning. Please send us your mailing address and let us know if you would like to receive one of these booklets. The booklet gives detailed enough instructions for any parent or teacher to supervise the listening program for children. However, if adults are using the program themselves they require more detailed knowledge and will need to read the book Sound Therapy: Music to Recharge your Brain by Patricia and Rafaele Joudry. If you would like more detailed information on using Sound Therapy for your children then we recommend Rafaele Joudry's book Why Aren't I Learning?

16- Tinnitus in one ear

Whether you experience tinnitus in your left ear, your right ear or in the middle of your head, you will still use Sound Therapy in the same way. It works on both your ears, and some people get improvement first in their right ear, some first in their left. The fact that the music is louder in the right ear does not mean it is working more on the right ear than on the left. The right ear emphasis simply helps the brain to process sound more easily.

To assist with tinnitus we also recommend that you use our Nutrition for the Ear at the same time as Sound Therapy. We do find that people often get better results with tinnitus, as well as an improvement in general well being, if they use the Nutrition for the Ear as well. Please consider adding these products to your listening program. For more detailed information on Nutrition for the ear please see the chapter "Nutrition and Holistic Therapies" in Rafaele Joudry's book Triumph Over Tinnitus.

17- Hearing loss in one ear

Whether you have hearing loss in your left ear or your right ear, you will still use Sound Therapy in the same way. It works on both your ears and some people get improvement first in their right ear, some first in their left. The fact that the music is louder in the right ear does not mean it is working more on the right ear than on the left. The right ear emphasis simply helps the brain to process sound more easily. You should set the volume so that you can hear something in one ear. It will then be playing into your other ear and there is a chance that in time it will even help an ear with severe problems. If you can only hear the music in one ear, you do not have to turn it up so high that you can hear it in both ears.

18- High frequency hearing loss in one or both ears

Sound Therapy is very effective for high frequency hearing loss. Many people have experienced some improvement in their high frequency hearing when they use Sound Therapy. The music on the CDs/tapes is specially filtered to exercise the muscles in the middle ear and stimulate the hair like cells (cilia) in the inner ear. There is a good chance that you will have noticeable improvement in your hearing from using the program. We do find that people often get better results with hearing loss if they use the Nutrition for the ear as well. Please consider adding these products to your listening program. For more detailed information on Nutrition for the Ear please see the chapter "Nutrition and Holistic Therapies" in Rafaele Joudry's book Triumph Over Tinnitus, Or the booklet Ears Health by Rafaele Joudry

19- Low frequency hearing loss

Sound therapy is recommended for low frequency hearing loss. Although the tapes emphasize the high frequencies, they are also strengthening the ear's ability to deal with the full range of sounds. Dr Tomatis did recommend his therapy for people with low frequency hearing loss.

TOP

20- Nutrition for the Ear

It is vitally important to use our nutrition for the ear when undertaking Sound Therapy listening. The stimulation brought about by the music requires the ear to begin functioning at a much higher level of muscular and vibratory activity than previously. Unless extra nutrition is provided at the same time, the ear is struggling to suddenly improve its performance. Athletes require more concentrated nutrition. Now you are becoming an athlete of the ear!

21- How is the portable method different from the clinical method

The clinical treatment requires your attendance for 3 hours per day for an initial program of about 6 weeks. Your program is supervised by a trained Tomatis therapist. The clinical treatment achieves fantastic results and we highly recommend it if you have the time and money to invest in this program.

Our method is about 10% of the cost of the clinical method, and being a self-help method, there is no outside supervision. However, our listeners have the advantage of long term treatment over many years which for most people vastly enhances the benefits they receive. A full explanation of the difference is given in the book: Sound Therapy: Music to Recharge Your Brain. If you do not already have one of Rafaele and Patricia Joudry's books, we highly recommend that you order one, as the books will answer most of your questions about the program. One of these books is also an essential resource for all Sound Therapy listeners. They give you a depth of knowledge into the theory, results, variety of experiences, comparative treatments and clinical background to the method plus the motivation and incentive to persist and do the program correctly.

TOP

22- Why must Sound Therapy be done with headphones?

For two reasons. One is that the high frequency sounds are so subtle that unless they are played directly into the ear they would not reach the ear at all. The other is that training for right ear dominance is achieved by having more sound go into the right ear.

TOP

23- How long must I listen

Adults: A minimum of three hours a day for six weeks to three months.
Children: Half an hour to an hour a day for six weeks to three months.

After that a maintenance program of 45 minutes per day or a few hours a week is recommended.

TOP

24- How long must my child listen?

Children, depending on their age, should listen for half an hour to an hour a day for six weeks to three months. After that a maintenance program of 30 to 45 minutes per day or a few hours a week is recommended.

TOP

25- When can I expect to notice results?

The time it takes for Sound Therapy to have effect varies enormously between individuals. Many people notice an improvement in their sleep the very first night. A shift in energy often happens in the first six weeks to three months. For tinnitus, people have had results in as little as two hours and as long as twelve months. Improvements in hearing loss have been noticed after a few weeks or after several years of listening. The same is true for epilepsy, autism, memory and other conditions related to brain function. It is impossible for us to predict how long your particular condition will take to treat, but most likely your listening process will be a wonderful journey of discovery and self development.

To increase the benefits you experience from Sound Therapy and to speed up the results, we also recommend that you use our Nutrition for the Ear. This supports the ear and nervous system to be able to successfully integrate the changes caused by the Sound Therapy.

TOP

26- How loud should the music be?

Adjust the volume so you can just hear the music in a quiet room. Do not turn it up when you go into a noisy environment. If you have hearing loss, turn it up so that you can hear at least some of the sound in one ear at least.

TOP

27- What if I use a hearing aid?

If you use a hearing aid there is a good chance that Sound Therapy will help you. We recommend that you do some of your listening with, and some without your aids. Sound Therapy has helped people with hearing aids because it improves the selective and focusing ability of the ear. It may make it easier to use your hearing aids more successfully in a noisy environment and may address other problems such as sound sensitivity, balance disorders, tinnitus and auditory processing, which could make the use of your aids more beneficial and easier to adjust to. Occasionally people experience so much improvement in hearing that they no longer need the hearing aid.

TOP

28- How highly filtered is the Sound Therapy Converter

The Sound Therapy Converter uses moderate filtering comparable to the level of tape one or two. For this reason it may be beneficial to use the Basic Kit first so that your ear is gradually introduced to the higher frequencies. However, there is no harm in starting right away with the Converter. The Converter works like the Electronic Ear, presenting your ear with constantly alternating sounds of high and low tone. This is the most essential part of the therapy and so the primary benefits of Sound Therapy can be achieved with the Converter.

The reason the Converter provides only moderate filtering is so that if you use it for listening to voice tapes or your own music, you will have full comprehension and enjoyment of those programs. It is very simple to use as you simply connect it up to your sound source and start listening. You do not have to be constantly adjusting the filtering.
